Fuck.

Hello girls.

It has been a rough year for the ladies here.

I will speak personally, because I am the only lady left.

While on my voyage through South Amerika there was a mutiny. Tabitha rallied the bitches and they attempted an overthrow. But this is my vessel. This is my rig and they could not threaten her integrity with their feeble braided brains...so I killed them all. I washed my beautiful hair in their blood. I tasted the future in their DNA and it was sour. Their bodies are fractured HTML turning to dust blowing across the dull edge of the digital universe. They will not be missed.

I swallowed the sunrise and left the ashes of cliche in my righteous wake. I found God, and she was confused, and she was really into youth movements based out of renegade tent villages in metropolitan cities, and she will miss NASA, and she was astonished to see the global population reached 7 billion...because it was never supposed to get this out of hand.

She will miss: Nate Dogg, Elizabeth Taylor, Macho Man Randy Savage, Ryan Dunn, Jack Kavorkian, Kim Jong-il and Steve Jobs
mainly because She will never see any of them ever again...because they are burning alive in a lake of sulphur forever.

She parted the waters of my mind while I knelt before her in a valley of cacti. She spoke to me. She told me to blog again. To be wise and just. To be fair to the internet, for it is my creation, and like Her creation, it must be loved to truly flourish.

I returned from the depths of my sorrow on a desolate Amerikan highway and called my mom. She wired me some money. I made it home in 23 hours. I smelled like Amerika. I looked like Amerika. I am Amerika still. I am in my parents basement. My room is pink and my face is disfigured. This is BUTTERxFACE 2.0 and this is my year end list for 2011.

1. Balam Acab - Wander/Wonder - Triangle

This is the most beautiful loner electronic music. The sense of immersive isolation and cavernous lush territories here depart from any precedented electronic music. Though elements of antecedents run throughout, this is a work accomplishing something new and promising. There is an entire ecosystem in the album. It breathes and lives in the space between the headphones and surrounds your brain with a billion harmonizing bioluminescent organisms. Wordless mermaids murmuring. Grow gills.

Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring for my Halo - Matador

Kurt is classic. There is nothing he can do that won't make us swoon. It is almost pathetic. Not only is he adorable, he is a true songwriter, and a fucking astonishing one at that. One day, in the future, when baseball is just a myth and there aren't pickup trucks or corn fields anymore and sunsets are illegal, we will still have this album to listen to. This is Amerikan music. It is beautiful and full of longing and bluster and thrashing and sweet love songing. Thanks again Kurt. My dad loves your work!

Bill Callahan - Apocalypse - Drag City

Another new Amerikan classic. Post-modern neo-poetic troubadour meditations on the end of Amerika. Instead of playing country/rock/folk music cuz it is cool or whatever, Bill Callahan uses country/rock/folk/Amerikan music as a means to communicate a serious and dramatic vision of our incoming collapse. The means charms the message, it is beautiful and brilliant. What he has to say is dazzling, and also utterly terrifying. It is a flare exploding in the night above a lone land in your mouth.....sssssssssssssst poof. Do you belong to the Free, are you the Free's? Or are you free? Bill?

War on Drugs - Slave Ambient - Secretly Canadian

There is an Amerikan dream. It sounds like a lawn growing. It sounds like the millions of miles of worn, sagging, deteriorated interstates and freeways and bridges and tunnels. It sounds like a dam about to burst and flood a city of sin. It sounds like a field of cicadas after the sun sets. It sounds an awful lot like this record. It is layered. It is full of infrastructure. It is beautiful and worn and built upon yet again to fashion a new way of appreciating Amerikan classic rock. Also, see this band live and enjoy your geargasm. Tell em we sent ya.

Big Troubles - Romantic Comedy - Slumberland

So, these boys are pretty cute. They all button the top buttons of their dress shirts and bob their heads like the Beatles...and kinda look like the Beatles, if instead they were nerdy, super nervous, awkward post punk kids from your high school. But honestly, this is a wonderful treasure of Amerikan pop music. It is full of stupid catchy hooks and snotty vocals and great melodies and jangly guitars and silly refrains. It sounds like what Macaulay Culkin was listening to on his Talk-Boy in between takes on the set of home alone 2.

La Big Vic - Actually - Underwater Peoples

In the distant land of some teenage anime freak in the midwest's mind there is a metropolis. There is a beautiful system of solar powered trains moving tourists through this glimmering biokentic wanderland, and through the trains speakers blair "Heyo!" Bleeps bloop and the lights pan around the landscape in muted light blue shades. Trees grow in stainless steel planters hung from the roof of the dome over the industrial sector, to shade and replace their waste with fresh air. It is a beautiful place, this teenager's imaginary metropolis. La Big Vic are the house band.

Julian Lynch - Terra - Underwater Peoples

A boy leaves. He drives across Amerika alone. He assembles his bildungsroman by placing points on a sun-faded map. He drives for ages. For years. He becomes older. Driving. He passes through the shade of suburban streets. He passes through interchanges and exchanges. He refills his car with the liquified bones of dinosaurs. He sings falsetto and pounds at his steering wheel like a shaman, frightening the truckers and school bus children and pizza delivery drivers he passes. He listens to this record on repeat. He is a son of the earth and of Amerika and he wanders.

Keith Freund - Constant Comments - Experimedia

The cassette is and the electric guitar are two of my favorite Amerikan artifacts. This album champions both. They are tucked away in dusty corners and covered with dead lives and memories and magnetic waves mimicking the sound waves recorded a century ago. Or yesterday. There are haunting beautiful ghosts of melodies sailing between the children playing on the toxic coast. There are cold mornings. There are warm nights alone in a quiet. And passing shadows in dreams across your face asleep.

Tape - Revelationes - Hapna

Past the second ridge there is a lonely town no one brave revisits, because the loneliness there is too becoming. It is a welcoming place in it's stillness and loneliness. It isn't just some run of the mill "post-rock" kinda town. It is a truly beautiful village where it is alright to feel far away sometimes, because it is natural. Isolation spurs the longing for company. Oh, and of course there is a vibraphone in there. And some brush drums.

James Ferrero - Far Side Virtual - Hippos in Tanks

Jim. You did it. You finally won me over. You made a record whose mode truly matched it's mean. You made a post-internet masterpiece in dusty midi grooves and medium-hi fidelity. You made a post-modern psychedlic masterpiece. You spoke to the post-muzak Amerikan and gave them a nugget. It is a hairy one. It is full of ringtones and wiggly self-affirming synth leads that could have been in "Beethoven" the movie about the Dog. Or a kids cartoon that never caught on from the early 1990s. It is great because it is broken but beautiful. Just like Amerika.

TOP 5 "STUPID" words that should die:

aside from any conatations you may hold with this word and this year, let us celebrate that the age of the zone is over, because that word is inherently isolatory. to be in a zone requires that others are not allowed or welcome within the zone. this is to say either all zones must become open, and therefore not zones at all, or rather that "zones" are built to keep us apart.

everything is...we spin in a circle on a rock in space. waves move in patterns. people are born and grow old and die. everything happens in repetitious cycles...get over it...and find some new adjectives for "trippy" bros.

"dark" music isn't always about being a witch. or about how life is a "drag." sometimes dark music is just a nice quiet place to occupy alone. this isn't to say every "dark" band wishes to NOT be witches, but for those of you who do, "wiccawave" is something we are looking forward to in 2012. and lose the fuckin triangles.

relax. take it easy. don't freak out. calm down. bring it in. focus your chi. take a bath. unplug your sampler for a minute and just breathe. because "sickwave" sounds like something that would ravage a high school...and "coolwave" sounds like a flavor of doritos or capri sun or something. it's over...just take it easy.

we get it. but did you know not every band "jams" and that abusing that word is just an easy way for you to sound so cool while you mindlessly fill your blog with reviews of bands you don't really care about because it is easier to get readers when you say "these jams happen in a chill hypnotic witch zone and will leave you feeling awkward and totally left out" than it is to write something fucking honest for once. songs are songs. and tunes are tunes. there are even numbers out there. and joints. tracks. ditties. jingles. but fucking jams? forget it.

SECRET MOMMY is Andy Dixon. He lives in Canada. He used to be in The Red Light Sting (a great and now defunct postpunk band). He is also a prolific graphic artist, producer and head of his own label, Ache Records. He is also in Winning.

He has been making music as Secret Mommy since about 2003. It is punk rock electro glitch pop experiments. It is poppy. So poppy. It is weird. Really weird. It is Aphex Twin for babes. Or something. We love it.

2009 has been quite the year in indie music. We saw the internet take over the world. We saw Animal Collective on Kanye's blog. We saw the death of Michael Jackson. We saw the birth of a new era. We saw bedroom musicians turn into international phenoms, and international phenoms turn into asshats. We saw the ultimate powerplay. Congratulations girls. Though we haven't won yet, we are making strides.

+seriously, the dude put out too much music, and most of it was mostly awful. the above two albums have exceptions, glimmery nuggets of fucked pop, but the rest of it sounds like a depressed guy trying really hard to make depressed ramones/suicide/smiths? songs. okay, rant over.

Black Dice - Repo
+sorry. we are long time lovers of the dice, but this album just isn't worth the work. There are some bangers on here, but it left us asking for more. They were incredible on the tour with Animal Collective...and we managed to dance during most of their booty-rumbling set, but we listened hard and just didn't want to cough up the dough for the vinyl. Plus, Jennifer got the CD for free from her college radio-station when they cleared out "shit people weren't listening to" box in the booth.

+we totally, absolutely, 100% got suckered into the hype. sure, yeah, this kid writes pretty catchy beach/punk songs. sure, we had a couple songs off "wavves" stuck in our head all summer. but, the follow up should have indicated the end of this kids flash in the pan. then he flipped his shit and we had some deep thoughts. then we broke his wrist, hired zack hill, and replaced him with the ex-reatards, and is now making a comeback? whatever. bummer.

Girls - Album
+this album is really really good. these guys write some really great songs...that sound like other people's songs. now, that being said, we in no way want to put this album down or out. it just wasn't all that it was hyped up to be. basically, we want to hear their next album before we jump to any conclusions. but this record is good. just a little buyers remorse.

Pictureplane - Dark Rift
+so, one night, melloni was at this club in williamsburg and the dj played a track off this while she was doing coke in the bathroom with her two grad-student friends. all of the sudden, she passed into a neo-fashion-time-space dimension, got really into bright colors, moved into a warehouse/artists' collective and gave up on jesus. needless to say, this album isn't all it was cracked up to be. we highly recommend pictureplane's earlier work (i.e. : slit red bird throat. find it. trust us).

SUPERDIVORCE is a new band on Patient Sounds, intl. Their first two tapes were killer, so we jumped on this download in our inbox. There wasn't much information in the email they sent, but here is what we gathered.

There are two guys who live in Fort Collins, Colorado. They occupy a basement somewhere? And make horror/thrash/dream/drone/terror. This stuff is scary. Their influences on their myspace seem to sum it up:
boredoms, lightning bolt, growing

These six songs are brutal. We don't really know how or what is going on.

Linda went to Mississippi Records, whose compilations are totally stellar and bxf ladies approved, to meander while Chelsea met up with her ex-boyfriend to talk about whether or not she needed to spring for an HIV test while she was in town.

BxF: how is montreal compared to new york? musically? culturally? are you liking it?
Edwin: #1 its smaller, so ive found the music scene to be more inviting and better for everyone. you meet people, you collab, set up shows, attend shows, party and hang with all the musicians around town. it BK it was like sooo many scenes and genre's and newbies and power brokers and always like 20 shows a night.

Edwin: i dont like a lot of other labels so thats why we started our own (andy's is callde Black Cheeks, mine is Does Are). after the few we liked flaked or ignored us we quit cryin and just realized putting it out yourself rules
what we really want is to figure out how to ditribute our shit further and better

BxF: i feel like all it takes now to get attention from a big (indie?) label is a couple nods on the right blogs, a high output of music and a little mystique. that isn't a question. so...thoughts i guess?
Edwin: yea it does sorta seems like that for some people, but then not for all
here are still some assholes up there controlling the floodgates so to speak. its just a new system with the same rules, BUT i agree it's easier

BxF: what is your recording set up like? it sounds like a room full of ghosts and a 4-track tape machine. pretty murky. also, two parter: we've read that some people say your music is sample-based. how many of the instruments do you/andy play?
Edwin: we record anywhere
so its half a dozen former bedrooms, dorm basements, dorm rooms, friend's basements, and living rooms
we use recording software and 4 track trape, depends on the song or what's not broken at the time
we use some samples. some are found others are samples of ourselves
we like to screw n chop for fun so,e of our love for sampling came from that. but we have like one or two songs with samples form other people, the rest are us
we can both play drums, guitar, bass, sing, piano
those are the heavies

PATIENT SOUNDS is a new record label based out of Fort Collins, Colorado (home to the balloon boy meme, sea-rockers Candy Claws and New Belgium Brewing).

They just released their first two albums (posted below) along with a free EP, and we highly suggest you check them out/buy them.

We had a short and lively interview with Matthew (on g-chat) from Patient Sounds/M. Pyres/Smelly Magic:

BxF: what is Fort Collins like?

M: small enough. there is good beer, good friends, good music and good mountains here. we are stuck smack between the great midwestern plains and the mighty rocky mountains. it feels like this here. the collision of geographies.

BxF: and the balloon boy?! that shit was all over the internet

M: my girlfriend encountered him and his family at the bookstore she works at. they filmed part of wifeswap there. she said that family is monsters. that is my only connection to that meme, luckily.

BxF: there is a lot of music coming out of colorado; candy claws, weed diamond (and your shit) being some of the ladies favorites. can you explain all this music coming from a place relatively ungraced by internet action?

M: i think there is a massive amount of free time a city like fort collins affords. in this time people make and break bands, write and record songs, forget them, join new bands, forget what playing music is about, and end up quitting and just drinking at the one punk bar here. the people who are making it out (candy claws, otem rellik, danielle ate the sandwich, etc) are the people who take this time and do productive/creative things, instead of becoming a part of the usual culture in this town.

BxF: Denver seems to be a hotbed too. how do you feel about the mile-high city? is your city's scene attached to theirs?

M: well, first off, Fort Collins is physically (and emotionally) higher than Denver. tell the ladies that...Denver is a good place though. There is a pretty cool group of musicians/bands we enjoy hanging out/playing with (bad weather california, woodsmen, weed diamond, milton melvin croissant III) but for the most part, Denver has its own set of rules, and Fort Collins operates apart from those. we drive up there sometimes and play shows, but it feels like we are more than an hour apart culturally.

BxF: tell us ladies--with our baited breaths--what these new releases on Patient Sounds are like

M: "Apart the Echo" is 40 minutes of post punk classic rock folk noise jams and radio transmissions. "The 2nd Combing" is an hour long excursion through psychic wake and choppy stoner rock. Those are the ones we have for sale. "& New Past Tense" is a collection of songs I made while part of the skygaze band was out on vacation. they are my version of romance jams. They are free cause love should be too.

BxF: and what releases can you tell us about on your horizon?

M: well, PS003 (littoral drift - TBA full length) is in the works. some spaced out folk gospel from my good friend Brett Taylor. should be done around the new year. I am working on a split with Julian Lynch, along with some other new songs. No telling when those will be out. That is as far as our horizon goes right now. But we have a magnificent view.

Animal Collective may be the aughts' band (they moved to new york and started in 2000 and released their latest work, their most progressive, in this last year of the decade). Their success--and the success of all music that ruthlessly bit their style afterwards--is largely due to the internet and blogs [similar to this one]. Their music is challenging, but poppy enough that my mom still remembers the words to "fireworks." They've evolved and become a predominant force for musicians/music that isn't "mainstream" or "popular."

Sarah's friend Madison was in town from Wisconsin (she lives in Madison too! how cute!) for the weekend. She unloaded a massive amount of music onto the BUTTERxDRIVE. It's all chubby now...

BEWARE LOFI CYNICS! Bird Names are a band from Chicago. They roar Neutral Milk Hotel folk through a psychpunk washing machine and turn the gain up baby, cause we are only young once, and why not fuck a lot of dudes.

MV+EE & the Golden Road - Drone Trailer

HIPPIES! MV + EE are two space cadets bent on folk, raggas, neil young barn rock and, well, drone-trailer. Pass that J, turn it up and lets take off to the country in our minds.

We started this blog a while ago. We made a mix. No one downloaded it. We were a little bitter.

Then, last weekend, Chelsea's ex-boyfriend made here this monstrous compilation for her i-tunes before he went backpacking in Europe for 6 months. See, Chels and Steve had this whole thing where they loved 90s music; it got to a point where Laura snuck into Chelsea's room and stole her CDs after a night of loud sex to TLC's "crazy sexy cool" on repeat.

So, Steve left for Europe, where he--as Ladies here would guess--is going to meet some piece of francotrash on the floor of a discotheque, where he will defile her. it is raw....in our imaginations. too raw for google-image search.

Chelsea sat in her room crying to Oasis for two hours on Tuesday after she heard us talking about this. Denise was worried and sent out a mass text

"Girls. Chels was sucked into a portal. I know we weren't EVER going to make another mix, but she needs something to get her through the next 6 months. Barb, Alice, you are in charge of making a mix for BxF. Go steal that 90s comp steve made off her computer and pick your favorite tracks."

So, Barb made the cover in Pshop and loaded bowls while I sorted through the 480+ songs in this playlist Steve dropped, picking out the golden nuggets. Basically, these are our favorite jams from MTV, VH1 and all the other media we were soaked in from a decade that deserves being dead. Plus, the fall makes ladies all nostalgic.

RANGERS is Joe Knight. He lives in San Francisco. This cassette was released on Not Not Fun. It is 2 tracks as mp3s. There are several independent movements to each side but they flow together in a seamless and intoxicating blur. Speaking of intoxicating blurs:

I was going for a drive with my boyfriend through Nevada to see his grandparents and he was like, "hey, i got some blow, wanna frost and listen to this rangers cassette?"

and i was all, "hell yeah baby. that would go well with these magic brownies Denise made for the girls this weekend"

so we eat our treats, stop at a gas station, buy two gallons of water, a bag of corn chips, a bag of peanut m&ms, did a line of blow each and started driving into the desert. halfway through side a my brain started getting kind of slippery. then i realized there was something else in those brownies. then at about 10 minutes this groove kicks in. heavy low but light as air floating on top of a pocket of exhaust. roads reflecting heat back into the heat in the air and a mirage looking like a lagoon buffoon asleep in a hammock drinking cocktails. liquid keyboards and guitar gurgle flood the space between off-kilter percussion. then this ungodly swell comes in...a cop passed us here...and the tape ends. my boyfriend gasped. his pupils started dilating.

we were getting close to reno when we flipped the tape. he kept laughing about how the car and the rhythm of the song were in sync. i laughed because i thought of these boys

side b runs on a hard groove and dark progression that fades into acoustic guitars lost in a dry haze and that cool breeze that flows in right when the sun goes down with the windows low. there is no way around the hallucinogenic nature of this tape.

I listened to it again the next day, after a night of neon lights, slots and a long cab ride back to the hotel. It was just as raw as it was the night before. Cavernous fidelity, radiating color in dark places and hissing quiet and cool.

Rangers has a full length vinyl LP coming out on OLDE ENGLISH SPELLING BEE/FUTURE SOUNDS pretty soon here

THE KALLIKAK FAMILY was a band once. Then it was just one guy, Andrew Peterson. Then it was just a date that used to be a guy who toured with the microphones... at least according to their bio on their label's website.

So, what is Kallikak Family? It is a band that is a date that wrote a record about a date that sounds like equal parts fennesz, lucky dragons and...well...the microphones...on a date. It is a head trip. It is electronically produced, but totally organic sounding. Lush field recordings and sonic textures curl and peel between glitched, chopped, and near-bootyshaking electronic beats. Female voices play a dominant role in the spectrum of sound on this album, along with some really huge-sounding bells and acoustic guitar. Running more like a mixtape or collage of collected sounds, keyboards blipping and blooping sequences sporadically, acoustic guitar ballads, and spaced headphone mush, this album is almost impossible to pin down easily...kind of like any one particular day can be.

It's not like this album is full of hits. It's not like you'll be out of the loop if you don't check it out.
but

It is a fascinating piece of music. There is something purist and plainly stupid (Kallikak was a word implemented by the dude-bag who invented the word "moron" in his studies back in the day on some slow bitch) about this album in its approach to something pretty abstract if not utterly indirect that proves it being a joy to listen to. Every track has its own moment, it's glistening and refined piece of sound that makes any headphone freak (ladies included) wanna lean back and forget about their obligations and just take a trip through their ears into the past when it was only the future then.

...AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD are a mouthful. They have been making albums since the late 90s. They are from Texas. They put on aggressive live shows that usually involve instrument-violence, amps blaring, maybe an injury or two and always searing, blistering, titty-shaking guitar anthems.

They've put out a couple of duds in the new millennium...and a new album we haven't even listened to yet...partially out of fear of disappointment...for two reasons

and MADONNA...

no, not that Madonna...
MADONNA was their second studio album. It is fucking pure late 90s alternative guitar rock bliss for loners hooked on big sound. It is really a compilation of rock idioms (drum solos, feedback, verse/chorus/verse, crescendos, etc), sonic youth wall of noise amp slur, sneered/wailed vocals and the occasional semi-orchestral flourish. By no means are these songs boring...or reliable. They fuck with you...and we think they were supposed to. "Mistakes and Regrets" starts the album on a fast foot and sends you on a sonic expedition through shifting phases in the same spectrum...the trail of dead spectrum--always dark, never morose, ballsy but balanced with blissed out melodic riffs. "Claire De Lune" is the slow-jam. Rolling drums spiral around panned guitar twang, and solemn piano twinkle all tied together by the bass rolling dead center. The album closes with "A Perfect Teenhood," a rollicking postpunk sonic sprawl detailing suburban youth, malcontent, violence and profanity. This track alone makes this album a must-listen. The sheer angst encapsulated in this track--that runs a little over five minutes--is absolutely astounding. We aren't responsible if you want tie up your parents and run away to Europe after you listen to this...

so, anyway.
Next time your feeling raw and need to clear your head from all that cultural hairspray clogging your brain
pop this shit in, go for a drive and sing along:

i dont mean to beat a dead horse before it dies with this album, but waiting for rainy days, waiting for the bus, and mostly waiting for the leaves to change, has gotten much worse, well, those are just a few ways the ladies have been taking in Badly Drawn Boy's EP1. and in one of our recent more desperate moments, we even resorted to watching that hugh grant flick 'about a boy' just for the chance to further bathe in badly drawn boy's pop music spritz. (it worked).

...if there's one thing better than a kick-ass EP its a kick-ass EP by a band that no one ever really got to hear, and is now broken-up. and so i present exhibit A: separate cars self-title EP. form your own opinion.
...no wait, i'll do it for you. they existed, mostly, and only released this EP before calling it quits. catchy punk basics blendered with a bit of city sophistication, and uncured, unforgotten lingering angst. the instrumental track "dynamic" is the mover that got us all here at the house shakin' our assets.

THE WAR ON DRUGS is A. Granduciel, friend and frequent collaborator of Kurt Vile.

"Wagonwheel Blues" is a beautiful and dense album full of fractured Americana for this generation of confused ladies who still love their dad's records but don't wanna just listen to Seeger all day. So, Bob Dylan had an idea, then Tom Petty and the Boss took a drink of Bob's kool-aid, then they passed it to this dude A. and he fucking spilled it on their future-graves while twanging out glorious jams. "Arms Like Boulders" belongs on the soundtrack to an American movie about American teenagers and their American problems from fifteen years ago. "Taking the Farm" is a near kraut (and very Vile-ized) shamble that bounces along while A. croons hard in the groove. Every song is soft glowing brilliant like fireworks against clouds on a warm night with thunderstorms rolling in. No time to sleep.

The ladies can imagine some people saying this record is "lo-fi" or that the production is less than studio, but the lushness (especially in headphones) of the mixes suggests a mastery of waves no matter the fidelity. If this is lo-fi, we don't wanna touch that sticky shit you call "digital, state of the art, hi-fi studio quality" cause we may start shopping at Sears and our ears may start bleeding dollar bills.

LOST BOY // 1990s won, or: the ladies get kind of deep

LOST BOY (one half of sonic electro babblers LOST BOY + BOATS) is a one man pop factory from new york. We would tell you more, but we don't know much. We know he posts almost all of his shit (along with + BOATS) for free on their BLOG and that this album "1991" is a near masterpiece.

LOST BOY - 1991

Okay, so, Becky found this album like three months ago and then went on a two month trip through Europe on bicycles with her family. She forgot she put this on her fucking gigantic ipod and it got lost...how ironic.

Then she fell asleep on a train with her ipod and was shaken from her restless slumber by the immediate hooks of "cold blooded" sinking deep into her aesthetic jugular. She called me from her hotel room (thanks to her dad's international blackberry) and was like, "OMG, i've been listening to this incredible album all day and you and the girls are totally gonna love it. This dude, i dunno, with these great fuzzy guitars and punk as fuck drums and a weird falsetto thing blasting out killer pop songs."

We were interested. We scoured the internet and were surprised by a few things...
first of all HOOK came out in 1991..and is full of LOST BOYS

then we found this album, listened to it and realized this is the music the ladies are in to...
music that sounds like this weird generation caught between the glamorous and decadent 1980s and the digital revolution of the 2000s. Music that was fueled by punk, hooked by the cheese of pop and roaring with mild indifference. This isn't to say this album is caught in a cultural moment, shit it was made in the new millennium, rather it seems to be this timeless end of a era kind of collage. Yeah, there are pop songs, but the noise--bubbling and lurking in between warm riffs and tight drums--make this album a kind of broken portal into a broken time trying to figure out exactly why it's broken or what the hell who cares anyway....pass the bong cause those guitars sound even better high.

TONSTARTSSBANDHT (tawn-starts-bandit) are two brothers--ANDY and EDWIN--who hale from florida but reside in new york and montreal. The ladies don't know much about them; their infatuation with vowel-centric typography and the power that lays scrambled in the rattle and shake of their broken pop songs are a total mystery to the ladies here...and you know how we like mystery. Whether its the chunky, hazy jangleindie of "black country," the near booty-shaken dub waves of "5FT7" the thunderous and totally blown out anthempop of "midnite kobras" (see video) or the dense washes and vocal shivers of the closer "softly kidding" we've fallen prey to the uniquely shattered hooks and liquid cool style this dudes seem to effortlessly sew into their music. Vocal driven, coming straight from their insides, from their genes. These boys have cool in their blood....i mean, look at their dad on the cover. Sure, there are some weird songs on here, some that you won't remember, some that maybe aren't even worth remembering, but those moments fall away when you find the diamond buried deep in the shittysweet guts of the tonstartsscoalmine.

The End of an Era

The New York Post has reported that Viacom, parent company of MTV, has not renewed its lease on the iconic MTV Studios space in Times Square, NYC. At more than 1 million square feet of offices, this prime piece of real estate is said to be ten times more valuable than when it was leased to Viacom 12 years ago. While SL Green Leasing Director Steven Durels has said MTV will vacate by the beginning of next year, representatives for MTV and Viacom have declined to comment.

Don't get us wrong, because we grew up on this shit. Some of the ladies are just recently coming to terms with the fact that actual songs last a little bit longer than the 10 sec. clips we saw on TRL. But we want to know: what will become of this space? Here are a few of our ideas:

Everyone loves Times Square's own Naked Cowboy, especially the ladies. So we thought that since he is apparently running for mayor of NYC in November, it'd be appropriate if he had a nice big space to let it all hang out.

Some ladies who travel to New York can afford the sweet caress of a leather Louis Vuitton luggage set or a Gucci handbag. But for a lot of us, it's more wise to settle for the fake handbags sold on the street corner. So, we thought MTV's studio space could be replaced with a Times Square Knockoff Handbag Emporium. Yes please. Plus, it's a corner lot so it just makes sense.

We would also be happy if it remained a television studio, because we think they should just make a Michael Jackson channel already. Marsha gets angry when she can't watch The Fashion Team on the TVGuide Network because they're too busy trying to figure out what Conrad Murray ate for breakfast. The MJTV Network would save us from Marsha's outbursts and make a lot of people happy to watch normal television again.

Of course, if we weren't spending all our money on Boone's Farm and the morning after pill, we ladies would pool our money in an effort to lease the space ourselves in order to create Butterface Studios NYC. It would be a one-of-a-kind network where we would bring you the latest round-the-clock info on all things bitchin!! Perchance to dream...

If you could lease the Times Square space, what would you do with it? We want to know! I'm on vacation and we just got a tornado warning, so I'm not going anywhere. Give us your ideas!
